Frequently Asked Questions

We have compiled below some frequently asked questions and answers and hope you will find these useful, but by all means please do get in touch to discuss any question, be it generic or in relation to a particular trip - use the form on the home page or under each individual trip to get in touch.

I am a complete beginner - can I come along?

Absolutely! We have all the time in the world for you. The way our trips are structured, and the participant-to-lead-photographer ratio means that there is a lot of individual time and attention, and all our advice is tailored to your needs. We have had complete beginners joining us in the past, and not once did they feel out of place.

Here’s what Paul had to say after our photography retreat in Catalonia: ‘I'm a beginner to photography in that I had never really done much more than "point and shoot" snapshots. Thanks to expert instruction from Matt and Andreea, along with the support of my fellow retreat attendees, I learned more in one week about both the skills and art involved in photography than I could have learned in months of self-study. And never once did it feel like school. It was always part of an active holiday.’

I’m just an amateur – will I feel out of place?

Quite the contrary. The great majority of our participants practice photography as a hobby. Remember that amateur only means that you’re doing something out of the love for it, and not as a paid career option.

Here’s what Trish, one of our ‘regulars’ said: ‘I'm a pure hobbyist that needs someone to lead me by the hand and help me capture what is in the mind's eye and these trips are absolutely perfect for that. I am counting down the days to our next trip. These are my favourite personal, annual investment in something I love with people I trust.’

I consider myself a fairly competent photographer, what would I gain from coming with you?

With our experience, knowledge, as well as the huge amount of time we spend planning for a trip, we can seamlessly ensure that you make the most of any location, regardless of the time of day and weather conditions. This is a small group photography trip, so unlike family holidays or non-photography holidays, it’s been designed with the photographic needs in mind including itinerary or time on location. The additional opportunities we bring (portraiture opportunities, dancer shoots, off-the-beaten track locations, local expertise) are great added-value since you might not be able to organise these yourself, or it would be extremely costly or time consuming doing so on your own.

You’ll also benefit from being in a small group of like-minded individuals that all share the same passion as yourself. The community of minds on tour creates great energy and focus so we’re all ‘in the zone’ and participants enjoy sharing their ideas, experience or images with the others – only if they wish to, of course. Our lead photographers Andreea and Matt, with their experience, knowledge and qualifications are both very able to discuss photography at any level, from basic composition to the art of photography and finding your own personal style and helping you achieve that. Most of our past participants who find themselves at the higher end of technical competence enjoy our discussions about creative avenues, planning and executing specific projects, routes to getting their images seen, exhibited or published, accreditation or further education and much more.

Here's what Gary had to say: ‘Whatever your experience level, Matt and Andreea carefully and sensitively guide you as you develop your own photography style, challenging you take the next step in your photography journey, if that is what you want. Travelling with Click Click Travel takes away the need to do extensive research before visiting the locations but allows you the scope and flexibility for you to capture your own images, through your camera lens, being able to describe the places that you visit in your own style with as much or as little input from Matt and Andreea as you ask for.

What is a typical group size?

We always run a tour with small groups. Typically, this is about 6-8 participants plus us, Andreea and Matt as the tour guides and photography leads. On certain tours we also have a local guide or a translator with us as needed. Depending on the trip, our minimum group size to guarantee a departure can be as low as 4, and the very maximum we will ever consider is 10, so that we keep the lead photographer to participant ratio under 1:5.

What equipment do I need?

We have no basic requirement for equipment, bring what you have that can capture an image. If you shoot film, obviously consider what advice you might need from us since there won’t be the opportunity to review images on location! If you only use a phone camera, then we can also help you with that, but you might be a bit limited in exploring all aspects of photography – although there is a lot that you can do on a phone these days!

Typically, our participants bring along a digital camera with interchangeable lenses, with the more advanced users also bringing tripods and filters. Please contact us if you are in any doubt about what to bring. We are more than happy to help with any equipment purchases before a trip, should you wish to expand your kit. We always advise the group beforehand on what to bring and how to travel and strongly encourage our participants on a daily basis to only bring as much as they’re comfortable carrying, so they don’t end up exhausted in the process. You can’t be creative when you’re tired, plus this is still a holiday, not a boot camp.

Normally at the start of the day we run through what the plan is and make suggestions for what equipment to bring along that day – the most usual question is ‘do I need my tripod this morning?’, this is your chance to ask questions and leave unwanted items in the hotel for later.

What’s usually included in the price?

All our tours include accommodation in single occupancy as standard (no single supplements), all internal travel, entry fees as required, activity costs as specified, and depending on location, some or all meals (typically, the more ‘off-the-beaten-track’ tours include all meals, but even on the trips that do not include all meals, we tend to all stick together anyway and just split the bill).

We don’t include international travel, for many reasons – our participants tend to come from different parts of the world, have a preferred airline or perhaps travel on land if they join one of our tours from a nearby location. However, once you arrive at the arranged meeting point, we will collect you or arrange transport for you to the hotel and then look after you throughout the duration! We are always happy to provide advice and options for international travel and put participants in contact with each other if they travel from the same location.

There is unlimited photographic advice and support that is included with all our tours (more info in next question). There are two of us to help you and we can cover anything from the very basics to any advanced level that you might be at. We can discuss and advise from basic camera settings, lens choice, composition, light direction etc to the art of photography and even provide inspiration in directions you might not have thought of.

How much photography tuition is included?

Basically, however much you need or want! We typically provide support on an on-demand, as-needed basis, so that means coming and asking us about what you’d like to do and achieve. We do ask everyone at the beginning of the tour to let us know their aspirations and then keep this in mind as the tour progresses. We will come and check on you throughout the day to make sure you’re happy with what you’re getting. The advice we give is usually on demand, always tailored to each individual and never judgmental.

We also like to run reviews and feedback sessions; this can include post-production or simple image reviews with tips and guidance along the way. We are always happy to get these organised at no extra cost after a tour had finished, as most participants want some time to download and select their images once they’re back home.

Perhaps more importantly, we do a lot of work behind the scenes to ensure that, throughout our tours, our participants are in the right places at the right times and exposed to the best photographic opportunities: from the way we plan our itinerary, to organising specific activities such as booking an Apsara dancer to pose for us at a Cambodian temple at sunset, hiring a full Venetian carnival costume for our model in Venice to achieve fantastic images in less touristy locations, or working with our local guide to spend a mesmerising evening having dinner with an Akha tribe chief and his wife in the depths of north Laos!

Who are the tutors / tour leads?

Andreea and Matt are seasoned travel photographers but also experienced commercial photographers, having owned and ran a photography business in the UK for many years. When they’re not planning or running tours, in addition to commercial commissions, they both pursue their own photographic projects in the contemporary photography space.

Andreea holds a degree in philosophy and a master’s in photography, which makes her well-armed in any discussion surrounding photography. As a qualified project manager in her past corporate life, with much experience in getting people to the right place at the right time, she is the main tour organiser.

Matt also has a master’s in photography and alongside that, his previous engineering qualifications and experience make him very suited to any technical questions or questions surrounding technique.

They have both experienced and experimented with all known photography mediums: large and medium format cameras, film and digital, mirrorless, cropped sensor, full frame, prime and zoom lenses, phones, drones, editing, printing, exhibiting, undertaking qualifications, receiving awards.

They are also, perhaps even more important than anything, kind, patient, empathetic, gentle and entirely non-judgmental communicators who aim to give inspiration, feedback and guidance as you require at whatever level you’re at and whatever genre you gravitate towards the most. Yes, they do like to challenge people in a good way pushing them a little outside their photographic comfort zones, so they keep exploring new avenues.

Our Values

We have a few simple values that are built into everything that we do:

Travel responsibly and support the local communities:

We design each tour with a view to not only maximising the photographic opportunities for our group, but to ensuring that we minimise, as much as we can, any negative impact of our travels such as carbon footprint or over tourism.

Investing directly into local communities and especially family-run businesses is a top priority when organising things on the ground: from staying in independent hotels and homestays to using independent travel partners and guides, eating in family-run restaurants is the norm on our tours.

We always favour slow, overland (or water!) travel when designing our in-country itineraries to reduce our carbon footprint as much as we can, but also give everyone the opportunity to really immerse themselves into the local life.

Nurture everyone’s love for photography no matter the skill or ambitions:

Have you ever been put off by judgmental feedback in your local camera club, on a social media platform or whilst attending a photography workshop? You are not alone. Too many amateur photographers out there nearly give it up because of insensitive comments or feedback that in no way constructive. This is simply not us – never has been, never will be.

Our photography coaching and tuition is always tailored and our feedback is never unsolicited and always constructive and encouraging, as well as taking into account everyone’s individual preferences, aspirations and learning style. We are firm believers that nobody ever stops learning including of course ourselves, and we just treat everyone like a peer: a fellow lover of photography!

Value for money for everyone including solo travellers:

From the very beginning we have decided to never charge a single supplement and therefore the price you see is what you pay: there are no ‘from’ prices and no hidden costs! Moreover, as a returning customer or a direct referral of one, you might even get some money off!

We strive to keep our prices reasonable (well, we’re not the National Geographic but we’re not a package deal either) at the same time reflecting the value of what we offer: much more than a holiday, much more than a photography workshop! The price of our tours reflects the fact that there is unlimited photography coaching and tuition included, small groups guaranteed, as well as a continually updated authentic local experience created with the locals!

A personal, individual experience focused on YOU:

Almost everyone’s had a bad experience once travelling in a large group because - well, let’s be honest, nobody likes to be just a number on a spreadsheet! We hear from many travellers with a passion for photography and their frustrations with not being able to get the images that they want: being at the location at the wrong time, being rushed from one place to the next, not having enough time to set up a tripod, not being able to share ideas or thoughts with like-minded photography enthusiasts, being frowned upon for wanting to stop ever too often.

Our tours are always run in small groups, between 6-10 participants – which means that with 1-2 professional photographers and local guides where required, we look after you on a very individual basis, both from a photography coaching perspective but also as far as benefiting from the support of a local guide goes. This also gives us the opportunity to split the group if needed, adapt the activities to weather conditions or other opportunities or constraints, and make sure we’re not an intrusive presence when it comes to walking through local villages or out doing street photography!

It is our ethos that your local experience as well as the photography guidance throughout is tailored to your needs as much as possible: from 1-2-1s on your photography topics of choice to accompanied shopping trips to local markets or organising a specific photo shoot on location, our goal is to make this a trip to remember for you.
